Wildcats Compete in Elite Showcase
Over Memorial Day weekend, three Davis Hoops High School boys' teams were invited to compete in the 9th Annual Patrick Dennehy Rumble in the Bay tournament. Davis Hoops, a regional basketball club, serves youth in grades 4 - 12 from Dixon, Winters, Woodland, Davis, West Sacramento, and the surrounding areas. In its second year of having high school boys' teams, Davis Hoops continues to surprise the competition with its high level of play and emphasis on sportsmanship. This tournament is the second prestigious tournament for the Wildcats this year. Earlier this month, they competed in the Drew Gooden Spring Extravaganza in Richmond.
The Patrick Dennehy Rumble in the Bay is a premier tournament that is the largest high school level event held during the school year in California. This year 96 elite teams from five different states participated. Scouting organizations in attendance included Networx, Hoop Review, California Preps, Nor Cal Preps, Section Sports, and West Coast Hoops report. Additionally, many Division II and III college coaches and Junior College coaches were in attendance. Known local powerhouses with teams participating this weekend were the Bay Area Hoosiers, Lakeshow, Bay Area Warriors, Oakland Rebels, and YBA and Play Hard Play Smart from the Sacramento area.
The Davis Hoops 15U and 16U teams competed against 30 other teams in the National Division. The 15U team faced 805 Black from Santa Barbara, 209 Elite from Stockton, and Lakeshow 15 from Walnut Creek in pool play. In single elimination tournament play, the 15U were handed an early defeat by 707 Elite from Fairfield. Tournament leaders for the 15U team were Hayden Russell with 40 points and 19 rebounds; Kevin Sorensen with 29 points and 22 rebounds; Cory Sorensen with 18 points and 19 rebounds; Tim Ruiz with 18 points and eight rebounds; and Isaiah Kelley with seven points and 11 rebounds. Also contributing offensively were Bryan Hensley with 14 points and Harrison Allen-Sutter with 10.
The 16U team faced the VYBL Bulldogz, E-Time Hoops, the Bay Area Hoosiers, and Delta Fastbreak before being eliminated from play. Against the renowned Hoosiers, who are consistently ranked in the top 10 in the nation, the 16U Wildcats posted their first win of the tournament defeating the Hoosiers 44-37. A defensive contest from the outset, Coach George Sousa praised his team for staying focused and being patient and disciplined with their half-court defense. Offensively, in this game, the Wildcats were lead by Bryan Hollowell with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Skyler Geerts with 12 points and five rebounds, and John Botro with 11 points. For the tournament, Elvis Bikoba, Ilanko Nataraajan, Zach Powers, Arnell Rusanganwa, Tyler Sousa, Matthias Wilkens, and Jack Yoder joined Hollowell, Geerts, and Botro in providing strong offensive play and consistently strong defensive efforts.
Rounding out the Club's play, the 17U team competed in the American Division, a division loaded with 64 strong, high octane teams. These Wildcats faced E-time Hoops, Lakeshow 17, and Norcal Basketball Academy in pool play. In tournament play, the Wildcats beat their first round opponents, the San Francisco Procity, 56 to 44, before falling to the 707 Finest in the second round, 42 to 55. While the Wildcats took an early lead, the Finest converted a series of three-point shots to close the first half with a seven point lead. With four minutes remaining in the game, the Wildcats began to chip away at the deficit with back to back baskets by Austin Hershberger. This run fell short on time and energy ending play for the 17U's. Tournament leaders for this team were Travis Geerts with 34 points, 18 rebounds, and seven assists; Collin Cohen with 35 points and 17 rebounds; Jaime Alverez with 34 points and 12 assists; Brett Cauchi with 31 points and 12 rebounds; Tim Mohr with 30 points and 12 rebounds; Hershberger with 23 points and 17 rebounds; and Dustin Aubert with 21 points and seven assists.
Wildcat team members will be joining their high school teams for summer training in June. In July they will resume travel team workouts and play in local tournaments in preparation for competition in Las Vegas in a NCAA-sanctioned showcase tournament held July 22-26.

Varsity Boys Teams Battle in Tahoe Qualifying Tournament
The Davis Hoops Wildcats entered two Varsity boys' teams May 15-16 to compete in Xtreme Hoops Tahoe Qualifying tournament held in Rocklin.
The Varsity White team went 2-1 tieing with McQueen for first place in Division 3 play. The Wildcats defeated the Oroville Nuggets 57-36 and the South Sacramento Riders 35-32. Their only loss was to McQueen (59-46) in their opening game. Scoring and rebounding for the Wildcats against a quick Nugget team was well dispersed. Travis Geerts had 11 points, four rebounds, and two blocks, Tyler Delaughder had 10 points and seven rebounds, Skyler Geerts had 10 points and five rebounds, Brett Cauchi had nine points, three rebounds, and one assist; Bryan Hollowell had three points, three rebounds, and two assists; Kevin Sorensen had six points and five rebounds; Ilanko Nataraajan had one point, four rebounds, and three assists; and Hayden Russell had two points, one rebound, and two assists.
The Varsity Black team faced tough competition in their Division 1 brackets and went 1-2 for the weekend. The Wildcats lost to the top AAU team in the region, E-time Hoops Black 60-44, despite being up by four at halftime. The 'Cats were only down 8 points with 2 minutes to go before E-time Hoops pulled away late to win. Varsity Black next beat the Irish 51-30, and then took an overtime lost to High Intensity 56-45. Leading the Wildcats for the weekend in scoring were Tim Mohr with 35, Dustin Aubert with 20, and Brett Cauchi with 19. Pounding the boards for rebounds were Colin Cohen with 13, Aubert with 10, Austin Hershberger with nine, Julian Cook with seven, and Mohr with seven. Assist leaders were Graham McDaniel with seven and Aubert with five.
The Davis Hoops Varsity team will play next over Memorial Day weekend at the Rumble in the Bay tournament, a invitational showcase tourney that will be attended by college coaches. Varsity coaches are George Sousa and Steve Cauchi.

Boys JV Team Finishes Strong at Tahoe Qualifier
On May 15 &16 the Davis Hoops JV boys basketball team went 2-1 to tie for first place in the Tahoe Qualifer at the Hardwood Palace in Rocklin.
In their first game of the tournament the Wildcats lost to the Cougars 47-51. While the score was close, the Wildcats could not recover from a sluggish first quarter where the Wildcats were held to only five points. Leading the way for the JV team in this game were John Botro with 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists; Bryan Hensley with eight points, three rebounds, and six assists; Jake Moraes with 10 points and one assist; Jack Yoder with four points, eight rebounds, and three assists; Zach Powers with four points, five rebounds, and one assist; and Elvis Biboka with four points, five rebounds and three assists.
In their second game of the day, the Wildcats were able to regroup to defeat the Irish 42-44. The boys played well as a team and rebounded strong to defeat much larger squad.
In their final game on Sunday, the Wildcats defeated Xtreme Hoops 43-30. Never trailing in this game, the Wildcats showed poise as they worked the ball offensively to get high percentage shots and the big men boxed out on defense. Point leaders for this game were Ilanko Nataraajan and Botro with 10 points each followed by Tommy Brian who added 9 more. Kevin Sorensen joined Botro to lead the Wildcats with rebounds in this game grabbing 5 each; Jack Yoder added 4 more. Nataraajan and Sorensen led the team in assists with 4 each.

15U ‘Cats Take 3rd in Qualifier
The 15U boys' basketball entered the Xtreme Hoops qualifying tournament held on April 24 and 25th. In Division 1 play the Wildcats took third place with a record of 2 wins and 1 loss over the weekend.
The Wildcats opened the tournament with tenacious defense and strong team play to defeat "N Your Court" a team from Hayward, California, by a score of 58-14. All players contributed either points or grabbed rebounds in this win. Harrison Allen-Sutter led scorers with nine and five rebounds. Cory Sorensen added eight points, four rebounds; Tim Ruiz six points, five rebounds, two assists; Kevin Sorensen six points, three rebounds; Hayden Russell five points, four rebounds, three assists; James Kilkenny five points; Isaiah Kelley four points, four rebounds; Ben Beukelman four points, two rebounds; Adam King four points, seven rebounds; Sean McCutcheon two points and three rebounds; and Brandon Baeza three rebounds.
In their second contest of the day the Wildcats had difficulty finding their rhythm. That combined with the high shooting percentage of their opponents dealt the team a 72-32 loss to the eventual tournament champions; the Chico Blazing' Heat. Hayden Russell led all Wildcat scorers with 11. In their final match-up on Sunday, the team made several key stops to recover from a 14 point deficit to defeat the NorCal Select team 56-45.
Tournament leaders for the Wildcats included top scorers Hayden Russell and Cory Sorensen with 28, Kevin Sorensen with 18; Harrison Allen-Sutter and Ben Beukelman with 15 each; and Tim Ruiz with 13. Leading in the rebounding for the Wildcats were Allen-Sutter and Russell with 11; Ruiz, K. Sorensen, C. Sorensen with 10; and Isaiah Kelly with nine. Assist leaders for the weekend were Russell, Ruiz, and K. Sorensen with five each.
Overall, the 15U team is 9-3 for the season.
The Wildcats are in action next the weekend of May 15 and 16th.

Wildcats HS Frosh Undeated in Weekend Tournament

The Davis Hoops Wildcats 15U Boys basketball team went undefeated (3-0 for the tournament; 5-1 for the season), taking first place in the March 27th Sac Area Sports tournament. The Wildcats' team, coached by Steve Sousa and Carol Atkins, is comprised of boys from Woodland, Davis, and Dixon who have come together to form this powerhouse regional team.
The Wildcats easily handled E-Time Hoops 50-29 for their first win of the day. Leading the Wildcats were Hayden Russell with 13, Ben Beukelman with 12 and Tim Ruiz with 10 points each. Others contributing to the total were James Kilkenny with 5, Isaiah Kelly with 4, and Kevin Sorensen, Brandon Baez, and Harrison Allen-Sutter each with two points.
The Wildcats faced the Rose City Spartans for their second and most challenging match-up of the day. The Wildcats once again came out victorious by a score of Wildcats 46 -40. Leading the way were Russell with 17, Beukelman with 11, and Sorensen with 10 points each. Also contributing were Kelly with 3 points and Allen-Sutter with 2 points and 6 rebounds.
For the final game of the tournament, the Wildcats defeated Southern Marin Lightning 47-30. Pacing the Wildcats were Beukelman with 11, Russell with 9, and Hayden Duer with 8 points each. In addition, Kelly added 5, Allen-Sutter 4, and Ruiz, Sorensen, Kilkenny, Baez, Sean McCutcheon, and Adam King each with added 2 points to the totals.
