by Jean Gelpi posted 05/07/2012 Another superb performance by the Wildcats 8th grade Elite team!!! For the first time in the club's history a Wildcat team wins a National Tournament Qualifier. The team played 5 games in 2 days going undefeated to
the final game and won in overtime vs Top Flight Elite from Palo Alto 51-48. With this win, the Wildcats received an automatic invitation to this year's AAU National Tournament that will be held in July 2012 (San Francisco), as well as an automatic invitation to next year's 9th grade AAU National Tournament.
"To be honest, our goal was to finish in the top 4 in order to just qualify for Nationals" Coach Gelpi.
"I never saw so many tall teams at this level. The final opponent had two 6'5"s and one 6'6" player. The Wildcats could not execute our match up zone defense, because every team had great shooters. I'm extremly proud with the man to man clinic that the Wildcats put on the floor this weekend. We practically out rebounded the opponent in every game. Also, average about 12 steals per game. I'm honored by coaching these kids. Most of them have been together since 4th grade and it was great to see how well the fundamentals came in play and how they play together not only offensively but defensively."
Coach Gelpi mentioned.
"Going into this tournament, I thought our team was tall for it's grade level. We have a few players at 6'2's some 6'1"s and a 6'5"(that is a great perimeter player). Trust me when I tell you that we were considered a small team at this tournament" The Wildcats defensive and rebounding work led to many fast breaks, including a fast break dunk by Justin Allen, followed by another dunk this time by Jeff Powell.
Next step for the Wildcats will be to compete in the 9th grade level at Harwood Palace in May 19th and 20th. "We have already beaten 9th grade teams, but this will be a great test and will help us get ready for Nationals.
The Wildcats current spring season record is 24-4.
Congratulations Wildcats !!!!
